LiPhera, headquartered in Somerville, MA, has developed a new approach that uses electricity rather than chemicals to extract minerals from battery black mass. The process, called selective electrodialysis (SED) technology, has been proven in a small-scale prototype. LiPhera is aiming to further develop this technology to improve domestic recovery of cobalt, nickel, and lithium from black mass with Michigan-based partners.
